Day 341 “The final night”

It was midnight when we reach the beast. It has seen better days. The elements have not been kind to it. Thinking back though it might have always looked this bad. Hard to tell in the middle of the night. The beast rested near a small group of  broken down vehicles. None of them worked I tried them all. Even the small sedan with two ghouls hanging out inside. Sliced my arm on the door frame when I noticed the two of them. Beth managed to put both of them down with a tire iron while I fixed up my arm. Before she took out one of them it let out an inhuman yell. Something we have not heard them do before. Sounding the alarm for everything hanging around that dinner was ready. Dinner being us. So much for spending the night here. The forest came alive after that. With the sound of all sorts of terrifying noises. Even one of the cars was pulled underground by something. It was more either more running after that or stay and fight. We chose to run.

We made a break for it. Running blindly into the night. Only to be stopped by one of those horns charred and a swarm of ghouls. I drew my drake blade and las pistol. Beth already engaging them before I could draw my weapons. Firing every shot she had left in the shotgun at them. She managed to score more hits than I thought even pushing back the horn charred for a bit. Until her  gun clicked empty. I scored a few good hits as well. This wound to my arm making it hard to aim well. Somehow knowing that I was injured the Horn Charred choose me as its target. Charging straight for me.

I barely managed to dodge it in time. That thing was faster than it should be for being that large. Pivoting around it make a second go for me. This time slowly making its way to me. I managed to dodge a few of its blows, but it scored a solid hit sending me flying into a tree. I hit the tree hard and felt something pop. it has dislocated my shoulder. Leaving my uninjured arm useless until it can be set. This is was it there was nothing I could have done here. My Year of awfulness was going to end here. Eaten by one of these monsters. The Horn Charred knew it had me after landing the blow and made its way to claim its prize. Lowering its head for another charge to impale me on one of its jagged horns. I only had one chance to make it out of this alive. The moment before it made contact I fainted to the left of the tree and dug my baslik blade deep into its skull. Sending white out flames from its head.

The creature fell and did not get back up. I wanted so badly for this to be the end of the battle, but alas it wasn’t. More ghoul kept showing up. Beth was doing her best to take them out using the shotgun as a club. Then when reloading it with the few shells she had left firing into them. I joined in to help her the best I could with one arm. My drake blade slicing through them with ease. Clearing a small path to run into the night. Only to be stopped once again by another swarm of them. It seems like them where intenaly leaving us openings to run into. Slowly driving us to a place we could no longer escape them. We ran and fought as long as we could. Knowing this noose was slowly closing around our necks. There was no hope to escape tonight. It was at sunrise when we found hope.

Day 300 “Wasteland Looting”

Ronin seems to be fully recovered, but Colonel Rives needs more time. Lt. Gale has taken to staying outside longer and longer each day. It is better than waking up one morning and have her missing. She has been reporting something walking around in the forest line. Nothing we can do about it until whatever it is comes out. It could just be wildlife, but you never know. The last thing we want to do is alert everything that we are here. Nothing says that like gun fire. A bullet from a rifle can be heard almost 3 miles away. Still it would be nice to get all the monsters taken care of before he start to head out. (more…)

Day 260

Colonel Rives had us go back to Ash Tree today to block most of  the roads leadings out. The Suburbs of Canson has couple roads leading in and out. Which was easy to do with all those broken down cars in the area. The plan is  to leave one road open for the scavenger teams. That should make keeping the Ghouls or Charred in the area manageable. Crypt Wisp on the other hand can just scale walls, but leaving them with an open road to take can make it easier to spot them.  A small team will monitor the open road and take out any monster coming out. (more…)

Day 246

We got into Canson early in the morning. The Forward team welcomed us at the entrance into town.  They have been working hard to clear and secure the airfield to make way for people coming. Ghouls have been attacking in steady streams here. Small to larger groups of them. At one time the Town has over 10,000 people living in it. Now most of them have been turned into those walking nightmares. How is it that some got turned into monsters while others remained human? Maybe everyone has changes and we just don’t know how yet. Could have  the charred and Crypt Wisp once been human to? It would take a couple people to make one charred. That gives me the chills just thinking about how that could be. (more…)

Day 245

We left camp Daikon for Canson two days ago. Tomorrow we should be reaching the city. For the last two nights we have been getting attacked by ghouls in regular bouts. It is like they knew we were coming. Each attack coming from random directions each time. The last attack a group of 30 jumped off a cliff and  landed on to the top of the lead transport. Thankfully these monsters are slow and not quick to get back up once they fall. A few people were injured, but nothing life threatening. The transport on the other hand ruptured a few hoses when it ran over a few ghouls that landed in front of it

The convoy had to stop for repairs. Colonel Rives picked  a old turnout next to the road for us to stop at. Thankfully with a clear view all around.  A perimeter was set and look outs put in place around the edges of the forest to watch for more ghouls. The nights are still cold and we can’t light  fire. Making one is just asking for something to attack. A campfires light can be seen for over a mile away when there is no other light outside. headlights at night going down a set road is not the wisest choice either. Our small squad did not have guard duty tonight, but none of us could sleep, so I took a small walk to warm up. While walking around to keep my joints from aching I ran into Colonel Rives heading back from the bush. He joined me on my walk and we chatted for a little bit.

Colonel Rives told talked to me about the operation into Canson.  I asked him if he had any idea what caused the end of the world. He had a few guess, but without intel just museing and speculation. I tried to press him on what a cascade failure could be again no luck. After that we quietly walk around until gun fire broke us out of the walkers dazes. A few ghouls attack again only a few this time. The sooner we get to Canson the better. Seeing the bodies up close of the ghouls just makes it more clear that the world has changes so much in these past 200 days.

Day 242

After graduation I got to spend  the day with my family. It was the last night I got to sleep in my room safe inside the camp. Mom was all tears which was odd to see. Courtney and even Dad was the same way. To say breakfast was awkward would be an understatement. I had to keep telling everyone that I had one of the safest jobs and Lily will be with me. Lily was more prepared to handle this than I was. She handled it like a person put in command should. All those extra weeks of training she got showed. Plus with her hair cut short she could not hide the scar on her face or missing part of her ear. She looks like someone you would have to think twice to mess with.

We spent most of the day playing games and crocheting while we watched a few movies. It has been a while since the last time I corchect. I kept messing up my rows and having to start over.  Once lunch was over Dad had a gift for Lily and I at his workshop. The first item was a monocular pocket scope. He said that it will let us see the crypt wisps. The lense he got for the scope have a coatings on them that will make them shimmer in light. He could only make two so we had to be extra careful with them. They also only work when there is light. Which means we should always carry at least a flashlight. His final gift was two drake blades. Something that was super illegal back when the government still was around for good reason.

Drake Blades are bayonet length knifes. About a foot from tip of the blade to bottom of the handle. What makes them Illegal is what happens when you press the small button on the side of the handle. Once pressed the blade is coated in a bluish purple energy that can slice through almost anything. Tanks, planes, people, bank valuets you name it can cut it. Dad had four small battery power packs each of us to keep them charged. He said that he already told the military that we have them and got the okay for us to keep them. Though Colonel Rives was interested to know where Dad got them. Once he ran through all safety features of them we headed back home.

Dinner that night was tense. Everyone was trying to keep it together and not start crying about us leaving again. Courtney lost and was a total wreck before dessert. Then once the table was clear and the awkward hugging was over once again it was time for bed. We had to report to the convoy at 0400 hours to get on the road. That ment we really need to be at the convoy at 0300 for gear check. I know I said the next time I write it will be on the road, but I just can not sleep tonight I am both excited and too worried about what is going to be waiting for us in Canson.

Day 220

My everything hurts after today’s gauntlet of test.  Sgt. Major Miller did not pull any stops to make sure everyone that everyone volunteered or drafted was fit to server. The military with a group of others town folk  fixed up the old obstacle course from the summer camp for us to test on. Everything from a mud pit with barb wires run across it to a giant wooden wall for us to climb. Then there was a firing range setup. Though because bullets are at a premium right now it was bb guns. The final was a ran up and down all of Daikon today while wearing a 20 pound pack. The important part is I made the cut even missing part of my hand! (more…)

Day 141

The military made it to the compound today.  Most saw it as a welcome sight.  People cheered as the convoy rolled into town.  Three Humvees, two jeeps and a lot of normal cars drove right to Fremont’s home then circle and stopped.  That is when the last remaining  helicopters landed on the crude helipad we had made a few days before. Since the world has gone quiet it was no surprise that they were close.  We were officially occupied. (more…)

Day 130

So there’s this movie that came out a long time ago called Ben Hur. At one point in the Movie the Main Character is forced to row a Roman ship with other slaves. I am sure in another life Mom was one of those Romans forcing people to row. Mom has stepped her chore game to ten then made ten louder. All to get the landing site ready for the military that is comings. Dad had to step in a few times to remind her we needed to take a break every once in a while. Thankfully the Military is due to arrive tomorrow and the landing site made Moms level of standards last minute. To be fair everyone had been running around to get things ready as well. Security has hidden defenses everywhere incase the military is not the friendly one we once had, but the marauder one this world might have turn them into. Escape plans, triage sites, and secondary site have been setup. Incase we have to rebuild or attacked. Everyone in the whole compound has been running around so much you would think that the Charred would take this opportunity to attack. I think the only reason why things have been  quiet is that they would have been put to work to. I could imagine it now. A huge wave of Charred showing up and Mom giving them chores.. Having them plow the fields, wash the roof of the cabins and digging new septics lines. The Charred saw what she was doing to her own kids and porably deicded that Mom was doing a good enough job causing misery.

The plan for tomorrow is for Linutent Maxfield to come with two helicopters. One will be carrying him and the other guards. He is to make contact with us at 0600 hours or 6am. Which is smart the Sun will hide there approach. Then they will head to Fremont’s home where they will hold talks. Lieutenant Maxfield will be accompanied with his guards from his helicopter and the men in the second will stay to protect the helicopters. Mr.Miller the retired marine said we should expect them early or at least a fly by. He also told us that they could arrive  today to throw us off. Normal military tactics to throw us off if we planned on attacking them when we they got here. Dad will be joining Fremont at the landing site. While these talks are going on we are to stay in the cabins unground bunker. Incase we need we are attacked. Each shelter has been restocked with provisions to withstand a siege for a while if need be. A few other families will be stationed in vehicles hidden in the woods. To make a break for a secondary site that is deeper in the forest. Fremont was setting up that place when whatever caused monsters to be real happend. Most of it is unfinished, but habitable. I have never been to that place. With my car sickness it makes sense though. I bet those are not the most stomach friendly roads. Now it is time for bed Mom is going to be getting us up in a few hours to get ready for tomorrow’s excitement. Beth will be joining us in our shelters. Which means if tomorrow is going to be the end at least I will be close to her when it is time to face it.

Day 125

It has taken some time, but I can finally write with my left hand again. I would not call my writing legible yet, but it would pass for a kindergartener.  I came home five days ago.  It was so embarrassing to be wheelchair from the medical facility back to our cabin. I was still getting a little light headed at times, so no long walks for me.  At least Mom let Beth and Courtney push me around.  It was the same wheelchair Lily had been using.  Lily started walking around again with the help of a cane Mr.Miller made for her.  I knew I was almost done with my road to recovery when Mom started giving me chores again two days ago.  Courtney has been helping me with that and it is nice to be back to somewhat normal.  She keeps telling me I still owe her for the goat. I had no idea what she was talking about until she gave me back my journal.  To be honest I had forgotten about it the last couple of days.  Almost dying to an infection, and losing two fingers hasn’t sparked the writer in me.  My eyesight in my left eye has returned which is great! Everything is healing nicely I even got some of the big stitches removed. Some of those stitches were driving me crazy.  I had a nice size gash in the middle of my back. Oh how it itched so bad at times.  I could not reach it without the help of door frames or trees. Mom would yell at me every time I did the bear dance.  You know the bear dance where put your back to a tree and rub up and down on it.

Later in the day Dad took me with him to do help complete the set up on some sensors he had set up around the camp.  Nothing to hard just hand him the screwdriver or hold the flashlight.  Near the end of the rounds we made it to the security/comms room. Only to find it was packed with people.  At some point today the Radios came back online and not the short range one, but the long range.  Mr.Jack had made contact with a military base!  It didn’t take long before almost everyone in the compound was huddled in the room or close to the building. It was just great to hear that there was other pockets of humanity still around. The man that Mr.Jack was talking to was Colonel Mike Rives from the 101 Airborne. Dad and I stayed quite and tried to be flys on the wall, but soon everyone that wasn’t security, Dad or Fremont got kicked out of the room.  Dad had me go back to our cabin and wait for him there. My hand was starting to hurt, so it was time for my medicine.  I hate taking pain medicine, but I am in too much pain without it.

Beth was at the Cabin when I got there.  She was on Brooke babysitting duty today. Brooke was finger painting with Beth in the kitchen.  Kids toys are hard to come by let alone finger paint.  When you are in survival situation fingers paints are not on the top of list. Which is a shame for Brooke.  Coloring, and painting are her favorite things to do. Brooke had know that this was a treat.  It  was the cleanest I have ever seen her Paint not a drop was wasted. Which is amazing on top of where Beth got her hands on the paint in the first place.  I had to know where Beth got it.  Turns out that this old summer camp we are at used to have a art room. Beth found it was still full of art supplies. I had to promise to keep it a secret though.  If more people ever show up with kids art supplies will alway be worth a trade.  Once Brooke was done with her purple tiger with yellow spots it was time for a nap.  I also joined in the nap this pain medicine just knocks me out.  I woke up later tonight just in time for a home meeting with Mom and Dad.

Dad rounded the whole family up and even had the Robinson join us tonight.  Which means Will and Beth were there.  Beth showed up in a nice knee length dress with her auburn hair done in a single braid down her back. Her dress made her bright green eye stand out.  Had Dad not brought up happened with the radio call today she would have been the only thing I would have noticed.  We have been secretly dating for a little while.  Thank you for the help with that Courtney I sure do owe for that one.  Back to the Radio though.  Did I mention Beth smelled of lavenders I am so lucky she would date me.  Sorry again.  Dad said that in a few days the military will make face to face contact with us. Colonel Rives will be sending his first lieutenant Maxfield to make the meeting.  They will be coming here by helicopter, so we needed to clear a landing site for them.  Which mean Mom is going to go into max chore mode to get that done.  We discussed some more of the plans, but as you can tell I was distracted with other things.  Then the Robinson headed back to their cabin for the night.  I went with Beth to walk her home and got to hold her hand the whole time.  I even got a hug before she went inside. Then it was back our cabin to go to bed Mom is sure to crack the whip starting tomorrow.
