Day 186

Dad woke me up early today to go on a special job with a group of other people. We went to the secondary site that was under construction before the collapse happen. At first I was excited to finally go check it out until we get on the road. My stomach was not a fan of the bumpy winding road that lead to it. Me and bumpy roads do not get along. The journey only took a few hours. I managed to keep my breakfast down just barley. Our traveling party consented on three council members and 20 military personnel. I had to ride in the back of a old truck which made my motion sickness so much worse. At least in a car seat you have some cushion. (more…)

Day 185

The first round of crops have been harvested and tested to make sure they are safe to eat. Turns out radishes grow a lot quicker than potatoes. Finally some sustainable sources of food. Though radishes are not the most flavorful foods. With winter coming in it nice to have something in storage. Once all the radishes were harvested the farm team started to planet winters vegetables. We have enough “MREs meals ready to eat” to make sure everyone is feed until the crops are established. At least that is the plan. What we don’t have enough of is clothes for everyone or a way to make more. Also shoes, socks and undergarments most of the new people brought here only had what they had on. Even with the cloths that were donated from the surplus it is not enough.

These radishes may not seem like much, but to people that lost everyone seeing something grow given them hope. People were holding them like a newborn child when they pulled them from the earth. This was our small communities first real harvest. That is when we noticed something that I never thought about. I keep calling our compound a summer camp, but it doesn’t have a real name. The council decided that it was time we changed that. There was a vote tonight in the mess hall while everyone was enjoying a movie and some snacks to celebrate the harvest. From now the our little old summer camp will be call Camp Daikon. Which is funny to name something after a radishes, but it drew everyone a bit closer to becoming a real community that people will fight for.

All to do with Beth

Beth came from a your typical overworked household.  She was the youngest of two. Her mom was a office manager at a accounting firm. Never really home and when she was never off work.  Dad was no different he was a clinical laboratory scientist. The company he worked for kepted downsizing the staff to make their quarterly earnings reports look better.  You know what every company has been doing. Jobs are hard to find and even harder to keep. Unless you toe that company line. Her dad worked worse hours than her Mom. There was no aunts or uncles in this state and both grandparents had long since passed away.  Will did his best to take care of her. (more…)

Day  179

Mom was the first one up today and she knew right away something was wrong.  I was making breakfast when she sat down to ask if I was okay.  There was no point in hiding it, so I told her about my dream last night.  She told me that things will be okay and that it was just a dream.  It was hard to hold back my emotions.  At some point during our talk I started to cry and she gave me a huge hug.  The kind that only a Mom can give.  After our talk and breakfast was made Mom went to wake everyone up.  I did not want to face Lily, but knew I had to. (more…)

I had my three of my main characters drawn by the talented. Let me know what you think.

Day 178

We are starting to run into things that were not accounted for with all these people.  Interesting things like not enough light bulbs, electrical wire, and other day to day items.  Even with the new septic system you need a way to clean it efficiently and maintain it. People also forget that light bulbs also don’t grow on trees.  Even LED lights have to be replaced every once in a while. The point of prepping is to think about the short term and long term. The compound has enough supplies to last for a while, but with all these new people we will are running out of things quicker than expected. Thinking about all that I can see why Colonel Rives can up with his plan of attack.  (more…)

Day 171

It has been a month since the military joined us. Colonel Rives has proven to be a natural leader.  The military did not end up taking over the camp, but worked with the structure that are already in place. In the last 30 days we have come together as a small society. There have been a few problems and only one intense standoffs. Two people that came here from the military camp decided not to live in this world anymore and ended it. Injured a few people on the way out to. They  looked like the type of person that had everything handed to them in life. Shame what happened, but why would you want to hurt other people in that type of circumstance? (more…)
